PIONEERING LIFE SCIENCES AND COMMUNITY REVITALISATION

The Cambridge Discovery Campus, located in South Cambridge, is poised to be a transformative hub for life sciences and innovation, valued at an estimated £400 million. Designed by BCR Infinity Architects, the campus will offer more than 340, 000 sq ft of state-of-the-art laboratory and science space across six purpose-built structures.

This ambitious project, led by joint developers Bridgemere Land and Foundation Capital Venues, is being constructed on the former sewage works site in Huxton. With Outline Planning approval from South Cambridgeshire District Council and £170 million in secured investment, the development is set to reshape the landscape, blending cutting-edge scientific research with community revitalisation.

BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO AN INDUSTRIAL SITE

The transformation of this industrial site will include the demolition of the existing wastewater treatment facility, as well as a nearby recreational building. In its place, a thoughtfully designed community hub will emerge. Plans include a sports pavilion overlooking new sports fields, which will be accessible to local residents. Additionally, the campus will feature a 30-acre country park, adding much-needed green space for the surrounding area.

Bidwell’s Project Management has been appointed to oversee the first phase of development, which will focus on constructing laboratory-enabled buildings and community amenities. This initiative reflects a broader vision of integrating community needs with cutting-edge scientific infrastructure, offering both economic and social benefits.

STRENGTHENING CAMBRIDGE'S POSITION AS A LIFE SCIENCES LEADER

The Cambridge Discovery Campus arrives at a pivotal moment for the region’s life sciences sector. Will Heath, CEO of Bridgemere, underscored Cambridge’s global prominence in the field: “The importance of Cambridge as a leading life science location both nationally and internationally cannot be underestimated.”

Heath also noted the recent £200 million investment in AstraZeneca’s expansion at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, further solidifying the city’s status as a life sciences superpower within Europe’s largest cluster of its kind.

For Heath, the Cambridge Discovery Campus is a key contribution to this growth, providing critical R&D space for the health innovations of the future. More than just a science park, the campus aims to be a positive force for the local community, offering modern research facilities alongside new public amenities and green spaces for all to enjoy.
